An EMT paramedic is a medical professional who works for the emergency medical services (EMS). Unlike the EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate professionals, the EMT paramedic are able to perform the advanced duties and provide the advanced level of care for the patients in the medical emergencies and trauma situations who fight for their lives. The EMT paramedic can also perform as field doctor and if necessary provide the extensive out-of-hospital treatments and diagnostic services to the patients. The general types of fields where EMT paramedic can operate are emergency response vehicles, ambulances, or some special type of mobile units which are quick for the response to the emergency medical aide.

This course can be found in university or different tech schools. The course curriculum for the EMT paramedic is set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is called National Standard Curriculum. The education for the Emergency Medical Technician Paramedics lasts for about 1000-1200 training hours of theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills. If you really want to go for this course, the basic requirements for this course are EMT-Basic and Anatomy and Physiology. The Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-Basic) course has been kept as the prerequisite because the knowledge and skills of basic level will be taught thoroughly not in brief. As for the Anatomy and Physiology, this is kept necessary but can be studied before EMT Paramedic course or throughout the program.

EMT Paramedic

The whole course is designed in four components of instruction: Didactic instruction, Clinical Education, Skills Laboratory and Field Internship.

Didactic Instruction:

The didactic instruction provides the primary cognitive materials in the form of the classroom lectures or instructions, discussions, demonstrations, simulations, video etc. The didactic instruction can be taken online also these days.

Skills Laboratory:

In this section of the EMT paramedic course, the students are taught about the different psychomotor skills of the paramedic. The skills are first taught in the isolation and later on they are integrated in the simulated patient care situations for training.

Clinical Education:

The students learn to synthesize both the cognitive skills as well as psychomotor skills that they learned in the didactic education and skills laboratory. The students are sent to the clinical environment with the specific objective in closely supervised way.

Field Internship:

This is done towards the end of the programs. Before going to the field internship, the students should complete all the above sections and be ready to perform as an entry level paramedic. The field internship is generally done in the emergency medical service which demonstrates the medical accountability of the individual.

After completing the whole course program, the students must apply for the certification exam which is conducted by the National Registry of EMTs. Only by getting the license as EMT Paramedic will one be able to get EMT jobs in Florida or in any states of United States and start career as a Paramedic.
