In the EMT training facilities, you can find three different types of course for EMT training. They are:

  • EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician – Basic)
  • EMT-I (Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate)
  • EMT-P (Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedics)

EMT-B:
Emergency Medical Technician – Basic is the very first step in becoming EMT. The EMT training for the EMS-B is designed such that the technicians can give the basic caring to the patients. After completing this course, an EMT will be able to perform the skills such as bleeding control, supplemented oxygen administration, splinting (along with full spinal immobilization), oropharyngeal airway, nasopharyngeal airway and positive pressure ventilation with bag valve mask. However, the trainings can vary with the state one is learning from.

EMT-I:
Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate is the level between the EMT-B training and EMT-P training. As the intermediate between the basic and paramedics training, EMT-I training provides some additional basic training which includes IV therapy, cardiac monitoring, use of multi-lumen airway devices and administration of additional pharmaceutical interventions. Most of the states have stopped the licensure program for EMT-I and have been focusing more on maintaining the current lists of the EMTs of intermediate level.

EMT-P:
Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedics are also mostly referred to as paramedics. They are the highest level of EMT who provide the advanced care to the patients. EMT training for the paramedics includes advanced techniques such as fluid resuscitation, cardiac monitoring, pharmaceutical administration, obtaining IV access and other advanced procedures.

These were the courses for the EMT training programs, if you want more about these classes you can ask for more information in the respective training facilities. There are also some other accelerated EMT training which last shorter that others but the cost is a bit higher too.
