A Brief Introduction to the EMT Basic Course
For those who want to start the career as an EMT, the EMT basic course is just for you. The EMT Basic course is designed such that an individual after completing this course will be able to provide basic life support with ambulance or other specialized services in the emergency medical care. The Emergency Medical Technicians serve as a vital link in the health care team as they are the first ones to respond to any of the emergency call for the medical aides. The EMT-Basic provides majority of the prehospital emergency medical care to the patients.
The EMT Basic classes can be found in any state of the United States such as Florida, Arizona etc. The general providers of the EMT Basic courses are different vocational schools, community colleges or teaching hospitals. These days, there are also some online providers who give the EMT basic classes over the internet also. The EMT basic courses are run in both the state as well as in the federal level. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is the organization that develops the contents and accredits the training hours for this course. The NHTSA requires the students to receive the total training of 160 hours including the theoretical and hands on knowledge. In addition to that, it is also recommended for the clinical rotation of the students on different board ambulances and in emergency departments.
EMT basic
There are total of seven modules covered by the EMT Basic course and there is one additional module but, that is elective. The modules are:
- Module I: Prepatory
- Module II: Airway
- Module III: Patient Assessment
- Module IV: Medical/Behavioral and Obstetrics/Gynecology
- Module V: Trauma
- Module VI: Infants and Children
- Module VII: Ambulance Operation
- Module VIII: Advanced Airway (Elective)
After the completion of whole training course, the individuals are expected to apply for the certification exam. The certification exam is administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT). Only after passing the test, you will be registered in NREMT and be certified as an EMT-B.
After being licensed Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B), you will be able to apply for the EMT B jobs. The employers publish the job description as well as the requirements for the EMTs they want to hire. Basically, EMT-Bs are the entry level of the emergency medical technicians for providing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in United States. They are only trained to provide the rapid in-field treatment and transport the patients to the health care facilities by ambulance or other specialized vehicles. They generally work with the other medical professionals such as physicians, nurses or paramedics. They are directed by the protocols and the procedures which are set by the respective system’s medical director.
